How to connect Asterisk to PSTN

Hi,

I’m totally new to Asterisk and VOIP. I just now started reading on Asterisk and i’m a bit confused. If I understand correctly Asterisk is pure software. Suppose I want my asterisk to connect to a PSTN (PRI), how can I do that? I guess I need extra hardware (card). What types are available?

If you want to connect Asterisk to a pri line you can use the digital cards by Digium: digium.com/en/products/digital/ .

If you won’t use an internal card, you can buy a PRI-ISDN gateway, like a Patton SmartNode. It will interface your IP-LAN with PSTN/ISDN. You can find more infos at www.patton.com.
