I’d like to use Asterisk as a caller-id screener for a standard land-line phone. I’ve got a little linux box Fit-PC and a laptop that I could use for the processing, but I need the POTS interface. Isn’t there a USB<->POTS interface available somewhere? Seems like a pretty obvious piece of hardware…
I’m wondering if a simple VOIP box like this could be utilized to act as a “smart” answering machine:

One line goes to the POTS, one to a phone, and ethernet to a PC-- which I presume could then control it’s operation-- check caller ID on an incoming POTS call, play a recording, input DTMF signals and then choose to ring and connect to the phone, or disconnect, or record a message…
What do you think?
