Letting the user log in on a hardphone

I’m currently formally evaluating Asterisk as a replacement / hybrid system to our current Swyx server…

Things are looking rather good with a few quirks but there is one point i have found nothing about so far…

We are using Siemens 410 standard HFA Hardphones patched to 410 SIP 7.0…

when we connected the phones to the swyx server using HFA, we had the possibility to authenticate the user via pin (the users extension entered via keypad and displayed on the phone’s LCD) which would bring up the users name in the display and the phone would get the respective extension assigned… My question is if there is a possibility to implement a similar behaviour with the patched 410 standard SIP 7.0 phones and asterisk (where i would enter the username and password , for example), before the phone would authenticate against the sip.conf entry - any suggestions? - or other solutions to this?

background is that people are changing desks over here (at least some are) and need to take their extension, but not the phone, with them…
