to create an external USB 2.0 “wildcard” type box so I could run Asterisk as a gateway WITHIN vmware (or something equivelant)?

Mycall-

Do what we have done, get an FXO media gateway (audiocodes, Quntim, heck even IAXys will work if you only need a single line) that Asterisk can SIP (or IAX) over to. We’ve done this successfully from VMWare and Microsoft VS R2. No hardware required in the VM, it all happens over the network.

Get something like a Sipura 3000 (sipura.com) and use that with Asterisk over the LAN. But, of course, depends on what you are actually trying to acheive.
