Is G729 free for just calling?

I am a little confused about the G729 codec, is it completely proprietary or is it free for just calling and a licensed copy needs to be used for advanced features as per the documentation given here

So is it okay to use for just calling without any licensing fees ?

If Asterisk is merely passing through the RTP without acting on the media, then no transcoding capability is required. That means no conferencing, no audio hooks (in-call features, spy, monitor), and generally no recording. Playback can also only happen if the source files are already G.729 encoded.

G.729 patents expired already (, not sure about G.729a as it has few more. There might be also copyrights for particular implementation you are using.
