Is G729 free for just calling?

I am a little confused about the G729 codec, is it completely proprietary or is it free for just calling and a licensed copy needs to be used for advanced features as per the documentation given here

So is it okay to use for just calling without any licensing fees ?

If Asterisk is merely passing through the RTP without acting on the media, then no transcoding capability is required. That means no conferencing, no audio hooks (in-call features, spy, monitor), and generally no recording. Playback can also only happen if the source files are already G.729 encoded.

G.729 patents expired already (http://www.sipro.com/G729.html), not sure about G.729a as it has few more. There might be also copyrights for particular implementation you are using.
