Thank you for the link, but what do these cards actually do in simple terms and why cant I just use a standard lan card?
Any most of all why so darn expensive! ? $500.00 and up to $3,000.00 for a card? Common!

Hi Doug, I’m a newbie too, can’t tell you why they are so expensive, but what do they do…
FXO stands for Foreign Exchange Office, and is the equivilent of:
FXS stands for Foreign Exchange Subscriber, and is the equilent of:
Usually your first requirement is an FXO so you can put your PSTN line into your computer as a line in/out. To be used by your softphone or IP phone.
If you add an FXS, you can also use your analogue phone.
Multiple FXOs = multiple lines.
Multiple FXSs = mutiple analogue extensions.

Hey, I’m currently studying at uni and trying to do some asterisk work as part of my thesis but I cant afford the $400+ for the digium FXO FXS cards, does anyone know know of any cheaper cards that are avaiable that work with asterisk?

Why not take a look at an ATA. Depend on which one you get you can get a FXO/FXS ATA for between $70-$100. And a daul port FXS for about $90.
The ATA will do everything a card can do and maybe even a bit more. It is possible to run a pure IP Asterisk server.
I suggest you look at both before you decide which way you will go.
