Asterisk install problems

I am trying to install Asterisk on a CentOS machine. I have downloaded and extracted asterisk 1.4.23.1. When I enter the command ./configure it stops part way through with the error : ** termcap support not found

This is my first look at asterisk so please forgive anything obvious I haven’t done. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

It mentions some required installs prior to installing Asterisk. Specifically, you need bison, libtermcap, libtermcap-devel, newt, newt-devel, ncurses, and ncurses-devel.
