I have a system in production, deserving about 300 persons. Out of the 300 persons, some of them use the voicemail included in asterisk, but some other wants their answering machine to pick up their messages.
My problem is that asterisk won’t detect their answering machine! It rings, rings, rings… it’ll never pick up!
lets start from simplest things:
doas answering machine function in phone is enabled ?
how many rings answering machine needs to answer ?
does Dial() timeout is used ?

1- You mean if the answering machine is ON? … Yes…
2- This is a setting that’s need to be set on the answering machine itself. On some machine it is set to 4, on some others to 6.
3- Yes. It is set to 30ms…
Well, before we did the cut-over, all these answering machine were working fine. Then we came, installed asterisk for deserving these people, and now their answering machine doesn’t pickup… Obviously askterisk has something to do in the picture…
I was thinking about the voltage, maybe asterisk doesn’t send enough so the answering machine doesn’t detect it? … Hummm…
ah, okay. the answering machine doesn’t even detect ringing? what is the REN (ringer equivalence number) for the answering machine? asterisk doesn’t do anything with voltage, whatever fxs card it is using does. what fxs card do you use?
I’m using 10 mediatrix 1124 gateways. It should support a minium of 3 REN’s for each port (a total of 24 ports for each unit).
To be honest, I don’t know the REN for the answering machine (I didn’t take it with me), but the chance that the answering machine + the phone exceed 3 REN’s are almost impossible… no?
You want to know someting strange? … I re-verified everything since I want to straight this problem out… And I found out that some answering machine are working, and some are not… but ALL were working fine before the asterisk installation… And if you take a answering machine that doesn’t work right now, you plugged it into your MaBell phone line, it’ll work…
If it has nothing to do with asterisk, and it has nothing to do with the answering machine, than where could be the problem?
I guess my best bet would be to try that answering machine in my test lab with only 1 gateway and see how it reacts. If it’s alone on one port, for sure it couldn’t be that it exceed the max REN…
And if it’s working for some of them, than for sure asterisk is not the cause of the problem. The only thing between asterisk and the answering machine are the gateways…
… And if the answering machine doesn’t pickup than for sure it’s because it doesn’t detect the ringing… than if it doesn’t detect the ringing, it’s probably because of a too low voltage on the line… I’ll verify if I can increase the amount of Volts mediatrix is sending to the port…
Sounds like your on the right track one other thing you might check Is make sure the polarity on the line is correct not for sure if it would make a difference or not but it might
