I have been trying to find out whether it is possible to use two asterisk PBXes with E1 cards (TDM110) to make an E1 over IP bridge in order to connect two existing PBXes via IP. I know there is special hardware for that…

Sure you can. How you write the dialplan depends on what you want to do, but it is quite possible.
