Hi there,
New to the forums and looking to collect some info. I’m having trouble finding definitive answers to these questions.
I have a WRTP54G w/Vonage, behind a PIX. It looks like Asterisk can be used w/my vonage device, but I don’t understand how.
What add’l hardware is necessary to get this done? …aside from the obvious Asterisk box
Thanks in advance,
R Davis
First of all you need to un-Vonage your WRTP54G or get another SIP device not locked to specific provider.
hmm, I’m certainly don’t object to that, but from what I’ve read there’s not been much luck w/unlocking or updating the FW on this Linksys box.
-Do you have other information? -what provider(s) would YOU suggest?
We’re not talking about provider(s). You asked about the SIP device you have, right?
I do not understand your goal.
What are you trying to achieve?
Utlimately my goal is to play w/Asterisk
Specifically, I’m having issues understanding methods to setup.
I’ve read that some users get a softphone, thereby getting their SIP credentials, is that correct?
Others use the WRTP54G and a TDM card
(As I hope to use Analog phones for now, that will likely be my route)
I understand my Linksys box is locked to Vonage, so wouldn’t they lock all devices? -I understand they have fw pushes OTA; does this happen to all?
For all practical purposes, I really have none
. I maintain our Nortel PBX at the office (low level stuff, CDPs, ACDs, phone builds, etc). We’re ‘considering’ an Asterisk solution for remote offices, but I would like to setup at home (two users, wife and I); so I may gain experience.
Thanks for you help,
R Davis
In order to play with Asterisk you will need:
- un-Vonage your WRTP54G or get another SIP device not locked to specific provider
- plug your analog phones into unlocked WRTP54G or similar device
- register you SIP device with your Asterisk server
- register your Asterisk server with the VoIP service provider of your choice (in fact you need registration only if you want to receive incoming calls from that VSP)
That’s good news, that I may ‘potentially’ not need add’l hardware.
However, (and forgive me)but how does one “un-vonage” their device? I take that as finding a new provider; from what I’ve read their is little luck in modifying the fw of this device.
-Please correct me if I’m wrong.

This means that you should get the full access to the box and be able to configure it for use with any provider including your own IP PBX.

Great read! -thank you for that. I evidently didn’t Google enough. I notice, the unlock shoudn’t be performed on a device with service. If the theory of OTA fw updates from Vonage are true. I’m guessing I probably don’t want to continue service w/them after the unlock. Am I mistaken?
-know of any providers which openly disclose SIP crendentials?
