My Trixbox 2.8.0.1 installation includes the following Asterik version:
1.6.0.9-samy-r27
I am having some problems with it and I think they might be solved if I use the latest Asterisk version.
Is it a good idea to update Asterisk in Trixbox externally ?
Is it safe ?
If so, which version should I prefer ?
1.6.1.5 or 1.6.0.14 ?

No, the samy-r27 bit is a big hint that asterisk is patched, and those patches might be what makes Trixbox “Trixbox”.
thanks for your reply.
Then what can I do to fix problems that I have with my Trixbox installation.
Trixbox does only have one community forum which I can’t find a solution.
Only users are posting and noone is really willing to help.
Trixbox does not have free support channels and I don’t want to purchase professional support for some free software that I use at home.
Even, thinking Asterisk is open source and free…
The fact that software is open source does not mean that support is free; all it means is that you have all the materials needed to support yourself, or to commission support from others in a free market. You may also get free (“as in beer”) support, but that is not guaranteed.
I would certainly advise using one of the current official versions. Which will depend on the details of your requirement. However I don’t fancy your chances of finding someone here who is experienced in replacing Trixbox Asterisk with a standard one.
I don’t understand what you mean by “To support Trixbox, we need to know how it works.”
Trixbox is Asterisk + AMPortal (and some other packages but they are not relevant in this case)
I mean Trixbox does not do any magic without Asterisk.
And, how do you come to a point that Trixbbox support is supplied through Voipuser forums ?
Trixbox has its own forums at www.trixbox.org and even there I couldn’t get any support from Trixbox developers.
Just the community…
Btw, I didn’t mean that opensource software should have free support. I just meant that I wouldn’t pay for professional support for such software that I use at home. Especially when I think there is a bug in my build of Asterisk. (or AMPortal ?)
But most of us have no experience with TrixBox, and AMPortal. If you are not sure where is bug - in Asterisk or AMPortal - how could somebody without seeing AMPortal to help you?
A quick search suggests that this voipuser.org/forum_view_27.html
will provide free, peer support, for Trixbox CE. Peer support is all you really get here.
At Voipuser we do have a Trixbox section , But This question relates to upgrading Trixbox with Asterisk and that is not a good idea.
But I have to Say that this forum is no different to other forum and it provides free peer support, and as Trix elastix and PBXIAF are All asterisk based. and FreePBX or other GUI is an esential part of any commercial Asterisk Deployment, and to expect to only have questions here about PURE RAW VANILLA Asterisk her eis a little short sighted.
I have customers with Raw, asterisk, Trixbox, PBXiaf, My own Gui, Their own GUI’s, Basicly everything.
It is not surprising that users of these different flavours will ask for help here, And when the problem could be asterisk related then assistance should be given.
