Does Asterisk have unified messaging capabilities?
If it doesn’t do you know of any third parties that might have incorporated it?
Unified messaging allows you to receive fax and voicemails in your E-mail inbox. Voicemail can be played as wav/mp3 files and fax’s can be printed or forwarded on.

Asterisk voicemail messages can be delivered (as soon as they are created) to any email account. They would be delivered as .wav files.
Using spandsp, you can collect fax files and, with a little scripting, deliver them to an email address as well.
I don’t think I’d make your Asterisk box a single source. (email as well as voice messaging) Asterisk gives the server enough to do without adding email as additional processor overhead.
