Simple Phone to Phone Solution

I have several Cisco 7960 phones and I am looking to setup a simple phone to phone environment for internal calls only. I see no point in paying tons of cash for a Cisco solution and I recently discovered Asterisk while seeking out an alternative. Would it be possible to accomplish this using Asterisk and what would I need all together to accomplish this goal?

Thank you very much for any help that you can provide me.

The simple, short answer is “yes”. Asterisk can talk to the phones. How difficult it will be depends on if the phones have SIP or SCCP firmware on them. Asterisk can talk to both, but SIP is easier to configure.

As far as what you need, you need the phones obviously, and you need a computer running Linux that will run Asterisk and a TFTP server that the phones will load their configs from.
