We are building an application based on Asterisk and plan to sell it as a black-box solution where customers will only interact with the functionality, without access to the underlying code. We’re also considering rebranding Asterisk within our product. In this context, are we required to provide the source code to our clients under the Asterisk (GPL) licensing terms? Additionally, if we proceed with the rebranding, would that impact our obligation to provide the source code?
Look at the documentation for any TV set top box. You will find that it includes the open source licences,. and there should be some provision to download the modified open source code.
Asterisk, though, is dual licensed. You can buy a licence, under non-GPL terms, from Sangoma. However that is a commercial question, and should be addressed to the Sangoma sales, not to the open source community.
Even if you do this, any black box solution will likely include LInux, and therefore require licence notices, and, probably, the source code offer, for those parts of the system.
