You will need a hardware board to plug into your Asterisk server. For example, if you just want to test things out you can purchase an old X100P board for next to nothing these days. Have a search on ebay as they are usually advertised on there.
If you want to get a bit more serious have a look at some of the Digium cards. There are interface cards for ISDN-2, E1/T1, and regular PSTN. A lot of these are Zaptel cards which will work with the standard Zaptel drivers installed on Asterisk systems.
