Outbound calls

hi all…

fairly new to asterisk. i’m a programmer that got invloved into an asterisk project. some of the stuff is pretty self explanatory but some of it is a bit dark as far as tutorials and documentation. like my #1 question is how can i use either the AIM or an external script to trigger calls. i alreday know how the Dial application works and the Originate comand for the AIM and have stuff worikng fine with the AGI but can not find documentation on how to actually trigger the AIM to start the Originate command or to use AGI scripts to trigger the Dial application within the a dial plan context. any direction or example would be very much appreciated…

also in the handbook on this site there is a brief explanation about the “technology” part of the arguments that need to be passed to the Dial application: IAX,ZAP,SIP etc… that’s cool. but how do i know which one to use when dialing out?!? there are a lot of tutorials and examples for the Dial application but no explanation on when, which and why a given “technology” will be used. my guess is that depends on the drivers for a given hardware attached to the box. in this case the machine i’m working on is using a remote provaider (asterisk server on the other end i geuss) to make the switch of the VIOP to PSTN. that makes me think that i have to use IAX. (like in IAX/3453453455 - for a ‘normal’ call). is this correct? any information on this will be greatly appreciated also…

thanks a lot…

It seems like you have a head on your shoulders. When you say hand book are you talking about “Asterisk: The future of Telephony” ? If not then download it h6315.com/ast_book/

We were all newbies at some time or another so feel free to ask away on IRC or on the asterisk users list which can be found at lists.digium.com/asterisk-users
