Joining Asterisk to Mitel SX200 via PRI T1 Cable

hello, we have a mitel icp-200.
We are getting a mitel nsu that has to t1 pri with qsiq ports. This will link the IPC-200 to the Asterisk (asterisk will have a t1 pri card)

Our telephone people (Towner Communications) know all about the mitel stuff, I dont. Ive read the book on asterisk by O’Reilly, and know a little about telephone pbx system from playing with ours at work.

The asterisk is solely to link the Mitel ICP-200 to another location that also has an asterisk box. ( we will run IP Sip phones off it too probably)

Anyways, i got an asterisknow installation sitting here. I dont know where to even begin. I know how to set up telepones, lines, and dial plans. But the book doesnt say how to link it to another pbx via qsig or whatever. Where do you suggest me to read??

thanks! (any tips also?)

I found this:
voip-info.org/wiki/view/Mitel+SX2000+via+PRI

not sure why trunkgroups and channels are links…i guess because they are not listed because they are universal to ur setup?

So using that doc, that is the same thing I want to do. All of pots lines are connected thru our sx200. I will run some wireless IP SIP phones.

I have a stupid question, one i should know.
Can a phone plugged into a FXS port be SIP and IAX, or can only IP phones? Pretty sure only IP phones…

Hello,

I am the one who connected the asterisk box to the Mitel sx2000.

Judging by your comments you really need to learn all phone types and signalling types.

An FXS connects to an analog phone. Like the phone you use at your house.

An FXO port is an analog trunk port like the one your house phone plugs into.

They do make conveters that convert SIP or IAX signalling to FXS (analog).

Hope that helped.

duh i see that now not sure why I asked that. had a moment i guess.

My question was tho, the config you posted was to get the 2 to talk basicly.
What if you added a fxs or fxo card to the asterisk?
You would have to make a dial plan and all that, do you have an example of what that would look like? I know a little bout our sx200, for example is has COS.
In the asterisk say i made a fxs line with an extension. How do I add that to COS #3 on the mitel sx200?

Thats what im confused about, how do i add things on the asterisk and make them have all the features like phones on the sx200?

Also when i add an extension in asterisk, does it show that extension in the sx200?

thanks

If it can be justified I would not waste my time with FXO ports on the asterisk box. Just use the T-1, but don’t make the same mistake I made and not get onboard echo cancleing.

You will have to setup routes for the SX200 to know where to send number that are dialed to asterisk.

No, the Mitel will not automatically see the numbers that you have in the asterisk box.

Go to voip-info.org and read the wiki’s for setting these things up in the .conf files.

If you want to make it easier to to trixbox.org which is an all in one asterisk appliance on a disk. It has a gui and auto installs most drivers for t-1 cards. Get version 1.2.3.

Good Luck,
Randy

curious on to why you hooked up an asterisk to your sx200?

if u had asterisk installed already, you can add a t-1 card still right? its not like an on installation only type of thing is it?

thanks

You will probably have to add an extension range to the Mitel and route this out through the T1 circuit. Then Asterisk will pick up the CLI of the incoming connection and this would allow Asterisk (with the correct setup of the trunk and extensions) to ring the specific phone dialed, or route the call out to another Asterisk server on your remote site (an IAX trunk between the sites would be ideal).

Is there any particular reason why you want to use FXS ports? Are you connecting analogue phones or other devices to the Asterisk system? If you just want to connect the odd fax machine I would use something line the Sipura SPA2000 or a Digium IAXy.

We wont be using any fxo or fxs lines on the asterisk. I was just wondering how it would work if we did tho.
(i could build a new asterisk phone system with fxo/fxs, and sip/iax phones. But connecting that to a mitel, no clue. Im getting the basics tho, im just corresponding with the Mitel people who will do this. I like to know how it works tho)

Alright Im back.

We have tried this on T1 PRI with D channel, and Incoming calls from the Mitel to Asterisk has no voice. Outbound from Asterisk is instant busy.

We have tried on E&M (without d channel), not working.

Has anyone done this that can help us? it would be greatly appreciated.

just an update on this, we never got it to work.
could have been because it was an openvox card not digium…we have kinda had problems with them.

i ended up putting fxs/fxo card in and doing it that way. I didnt have any problems doing that it is working great.
