Interfacing with a standard PBX via a PRI

Is it possible to use Asterisk as a phone switch? Basically, I’d like to be able to provide a PRI to a customer (using a local Asteriak server). My thought was to use a PRI cross-over and a T1 card in the Asterisk Server.

The goal is to allow the customer to keep their existing phone system while allowing them to reap the benefits of sending calls over a VoIP backhaul.

Any information on hardware required, documentation, etc would be very helpful.
