How to enter non alphanumeric characters for the password?

In sip.conf, is it possible to use other than simple alphanumeric characters for the secret key?

I had a password with a semicolon character and it caused trouble. Enclosing the whole secret within quotation marks ("") didn’t work either.

Try \ immediately before it. ; introduces a comment .
