can any kind soul help me with a very simple problem,
dead new to asterisks, ive a complete new linux 10.04 os installed and want to download astericks from digium…
am i right in thinking that there are first other matters to think of - such as installing the necessary kernals etc ? im not going to be using any fxo cards or anything , though may in the future…
Have a look at the Asterisk book. Installation is covered in the first few chapters. You may want to consider using CentOS instead of Ubuntu, as the book only provides instructions for CentOS.

thast exactly what ive noticed, ive bought the book and i know it will help me , when i can just get passed the first stages…
ive downloaded asterisk from the "repo"or is that reso list on ubunto downloads… thats as far as ive got, am looking for someone to guide me a little just till i get to the stage of creating a simple dialplan etc… dont mind paying to, but here in london, the average charge is £130 per hr , open source maybe , astericks certainly aint free/// thanks for your reply though.
If you Google “Asterisk on ubuntu” there should be a page with some helpful information about the equivalent packages for ubuntu you’ll need. Once you get it installed successfully creating a simple dialplan is exactly the same as what’s in the book.
