What is your definition of “high availability”?

Many people mean different things by this term, so it’s always good to
understand what someone wants when they ask for advice on how to achieve it.

What if you are on an island and an earthquake takes out all the telecoms cables? It happened recently.

What if a hostile power launches a physical or cyber attack on key internet or cloud server infrastructure?

What if an excavator accidentally goes through your internet cables?

Do you have multiple internet providers, with separate physical paths to your premises? Have you analysed your providers’ infrastructure to ensure they don’t have anything unexpected in common?

Where are you located? This may affect the likelihood of some of the above. What sort of business are you in? This may affect what sorts of failure it is most important to survive?

Are you happy to lose calls in progress? What about logging and voicemail?

My gut feeling is that you will need to be a big customer of Amazon and talk to their technical people, if you want to increase the availability beyond their standard offering.
