VOIP Provider with Asterisk

I’m in the process of spec’ing out an Asterisk system for my small office. I’ve looked on voip-info for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) providers. It’s still unclear what I should be looking for from a VOIP provider. What exactly is needed from a provider in order to run a VOIP connection with a phone number for an Asterisk installataion? I’ve spoke with a few and they all provide a SIP connection. Is this all that’s needed or should I be looking for a provider that offers an IAX connection? Any other types of connections I should be looking for?

My goal is to be able to not purchase a physcial phone from the local phone company. I want all phone calls to go through my internet connection. At first I will only have 2-5 IP phones.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Dont get rid of your old line completely, the internet will go down one day! (even saturated internet will ruin your calls).

you can use both a sip connection or an iax2 connection.

(i would not use anything else but those two).

I’m assuming that if I use IAX2 that the provider would need an asterisk box on the other end. Is this correct?
