We currently or running Asterisk 1.6.2.9 and are needing to upgrade to at least 1.8. We are trying to upgrade our FreePBX and it requires at least Asterisk 1.8. Any pointers or documentation on how to upgrade to 1.8? Thank you.
In your asterisk source directory there is a file named UPGRADE-1.8.txt that will advise you of the chances between 1.6 and 1.8.
There is one for each version of asterisk.
UPGRADE-1.2.txt
UPGRADE-1.4.txt
UPGRADE-1.6.txt
UPGRADE-1.8.txt
UPGRADE-10.txt
UPGRADE-11.txt
UPGRADE-12.txt
The list of Asterisk versions and dates on support is also available on the wiki[1]. Asterisk 1.8 has not received security fixes since October 21, 2015.

Thanks, so would you recommend doing the upgrade to 1.8 or what other options do I have?
That’s up to you. Asterisk 11 becomes security fix only next month for a year. Asterisk 13 will be supported with security until October 24, 2019.
Can I jump straight to Asterisk 11 or do I have to go through each version? As you can see I am new to this Asterisk
You can jump up, but you still need to read the UPGRADE notes for intermediate versions you skipped just in case.
Can you please point me in the right direction for finding documentation on upgrading to Asterisk 11, I do appreciate the help.
@johnkiniston has already provided that information. Those are the documents to look at for notable things. Otherwise you build and install Asterisk like normal.
Thanks John, I searched for those txt files but do not find them, are they under the asterisk dir?
They are in the source directory where you unpacked the tarball for asterisk.
If you can not find them on your local system they are also up on Github.
