Unable to run asterisk

Hey guys Im just starting to build my own asterisk server. I already did the following steps in order to configure the files:

wget asterisk-1.6.1.1.tar.gz, extracted
wget zaptel-1.4.12.1.tar.gz, extracted
wget libpri-1.4.10.tar.gz, extracted
wget asterisk-addons-1.6.1.0, extracted
wget asterisk-sounds-1.2.1.tar.gz, extracted

did ./configure, make, make install for zaptel-1.4.12.1
did make, make install for libpri
did ./configure, make, make install, make samples for asterisk
did ./configure, make, make install, make samples for asterisk-addons

everything went fine and it says in the instructions to do asterisk -r to run asterisk but it is not installed yet so I did apt-get install asterisk and I still get the following error

Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl exist?)

That error is so famous. I tried searching to different forums and I still can’t figure out why I can’t get to asterisk’s command line. Do we have any real solution to this?

Hi

And have you started Asterisk ?

what does ‘ps -ef |grep asterisk’ say ?

also what happens if you enter ‘asterisk -vvvvvvc’ ?

Ian

Hi again

Nope it shouldnt have as that will reconnect you to a running asterisk not run asterisk

Ian

it says

root 20169 26063 0 13:39 pts/0 00:00:00 grep asterisk

when I enter asterisk -vvvvvc, it does a dark background with a bunch of info

Oh yeah thats right. I remember my instructor saying that asterisk -r doesnt run asterisk, it just reconnects me to it. How do you run it? Sorry I had to paste the whole thing just in case you need the info  so is there something wrong here ?:([/img]

so uh anyone have any ideas?

you start asterisk by running the command “asterisk” as root, or
"sudo asterisk" then connect to it by running “asterisk -r” or
"sudo asterisk -r"

what is the command to run asterisk though?

you TYPE asterisk at the command prompt, the command is asterisk

typing asterisk in the command prompt didn’t do anything though. I did /etc/init.d/asterisk start and it said that it is starting asterisk but it didn’t say ok in the end. I tried typing asterisk -r after that and it still couldn’t connect to a running asterisk. :frowning:

you wont see anything as an output, what distro are you using first?
debian, ubuntu, fedora, centos,… either way if you installed it correctly if you are root you will start it with asterisk, or /etc/init.d/asterisk start but remember you have to be root, or use sudo. If you can start asterisk with asterisk -c I would assume it would work.

i’m using ubuntu 9 and I am logged in as super user actually. I expected everything to work also but the error Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl exist?) just keeps going up so I can’t get to asterisk command line. When I did asterick -c, it displayed a bunch of warning messages in like a charcoal background saying loader.c:678 load_resource: Module ‘res_timing_pthread.so’ could not be loaded. then other warning messages follow. crap I need to use ubuntu everyday. I have no idea what is going on lol

how did you compile asterisk? I have to run ./configure as my user, then as super user as you put it, I run make && make install. Plus I am assuming you did an apt-get install build-essential

ok here are basically the steps that I followed from my previous class:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get build-dep asterisk
apt-get install linux-headers-'uname -r’
apt-get install openssh-server
cd /usr/src/
wget ftp.digium.com/pub/asterisk/rele … 6.0.tar.gz

wget ftp.digium.com/pub/asterisk/rele … 6.0.tar.gz
wget ftp.digium.com/pub/asterisk/rele … 2.1.tar.gz
tar -xf asterisk-1.6.0.tar.gz
tar -xf asterisk-sounds-1.2.1.tar.gz
tar -xf libpri-1.4.7.tar.gz
tar -xf zaptel-1.4.12.1.tar.gz
tar -xf asterisk-addons-1.6.0.tar.gz
cd zaptel-1.4.12.1/
./configure
make
make install
cd …/libpri-1.4.7/
make
make install
cd …/asterisk-1.6.0/
./configure
make
make install
make samples
cd …/asterisk-addons-1.6.0/
./configure
make
make install
make samples
If you cannot run the “asterisk –râ€

is this ubuntu server? or regular ubuntu? did the software actually compile where did you get the instructions?

I believe its regular ubuntu. I had an iso image of ubuntu 9.04 desktop i386. I didn’t have any errors when I compiled them as far as I know. I was following these instructions from my previous VoIP class and yeah I want to experiment with it here at home.

how can you install ubuntu desktop and be able to compile apps without installing build-essential. You are typing “sudo su -” before doing any of the compiling right? I have read your steps and know that you are compiling but I want to know if you are doing it as root the entire time or part of the time or at all, was there any errors when compiling? Have you tried a make clean, make mrproper, then as your user, ./configure, sudo make, sudo make install? Are the steps that you followed on the internet? If you do a “sudo asterisk” at the command prompt, then “sudo asterisk -r” what happens?

I actually do su at the prompt then from there, I just do the instructions so all the files are located in the root profile and not the user. The whole time, I was using the super user to execute commands. the command sudo asterisk does not do anything or at least thats what I observed then the sudo asterisk -r shows the same error. These instructions were made by the school’s faculty assistants before and they did work. For some reason, I couldn’t get it to work here at home. I am going to just start up from scratch and try to install it on ubuntu server this time. I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for your continuous reply btw.
