System for Phone Tree/Menu

Sorry if this has been answered already but I’ve poked around on the various websites and haven’t been able to find anything…

I’m looking into building a system that has several levels of menus with recorded audio and options (think categories, subcategories and specific entries) that a user can traverse (ie hear) by calling into a normal phone number. Not knowing much about telephony, I thought of Asterisk. Is Asterisk the best solution to do this? I wonder if Asterisk would actually be overkill, as none of the other PBX features are needed. What do you advise?

Thanks for your help.

Asterisk is a good solution for your needs, imho.

Cheers.

Thanks, Marco, for the advice. For a quick-and-dirty development box, will I need any hardware beyond a supported modem?

You can go on without any hardware, you may just use just the sip channel, with it you can dial to/from pstn too through an itsp.

Cheers.
