Softphone over vpn

Hello all.

We an asterisk server running perfectly at our office (1.4.22-3). today we tested a softphone at my bosses house, which is connected to our over via a VPN link. The phone successfully logs in and can dial extensions.

From the softphone side of things, everything is fine, he can hear me clearly with no echo or sound issues. On my end, (aastra 9133i) I have awful echo. When I speak, I hear myself clearer than the softphone.

Has anybody else experienced this, are there any settings I can tweak. I have no echo at all in any other situation so far.

Any help would be great.

This may sound dumb, but I experienced this exact situation once before, but in this case the answer was pretty obvious. The softphone user was in a recording studio. Softphone was using speakers and an omnidirectional mic for input/output. The echo was the speakers feeding back into the mic.

Just a shot…

I think that sounds like a good place to start. Make sure the softphone user has a headset before doing too much troubleshooting.

That’s one of the first things I checked. From what I can tell from my searches the problem is more likely something on his pc, drivers etc and not the asterisk server.

Seems this is quite a common setup that works fine in most cases. Can’t see or think of anywhere that I can make changes on the server that would correct things. Just an odd one really.

Do you use tcp or udp for your link ?
try udp and change softphones to normal phones to see what happens.
