Setup question

I am sure this is answered here somewhere but I seem to be missing it.

I have a general SIP question:

Here is the setup: I am running asterisk at home with a few sip trunks from broadvoice. I run a small business and 2 of my employees work from home as well. I would like them to be able to connect to my asterisk server.

What is the best practice for this. The problem I have run into is when a sip connection comes in from outside, the call control works fine but there is no audio. I think I found the problem but not sure how to fix it.

The address that asterisk tries to connect with is a private ip address on their network and not their public IP address on comcast.

I know it is because I have no clue how to set it up so I am looking for someone to point me in the right direction or documentation, idiots guide, etc.

Thanks everyone!

Hi netnutmike,

If you Google search on the terms “asterisk softphone NAT”, you’ll find posts by SIP users with exactly the same dilemma. Hopefully there’s a solution in there somewhere.

Good luck!

look at externhost in sip.conf as well or externip

Thanks. It does appear this is a common problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
