Remote phone problem

Hi all:

I’ve got an Asterisk@home setup at our office that has 5 phones and everything seems to work pretty well. The next challenge is to get a phone setup at my house. I’m using Polycom IP301 phones. I’ve got the phone at my house and I can make and recieve calls. It even rings when someone calls the main number!! The problem is that after a while (usually an hour or so but it varies), the phone seems to “fall off” the system: I can’t call it and it won’t ring when I call the office number. However, if I make a call from the remote phone it will work for awhile and then I can call that extension again. I have two questions:

  1. Is this a “registration” problem? I don’t know the terminology for it and

  2. What’s wrong and how do I fix it?

Thanks for any help!

I too, have had this problem. My solution (probably not the safest) was to forward the SIP port through the firewall to my phone.

I think this may be a registration timeout issue.

I’ll let you know when I find a better solution.

When you say that you forwarded the sip port, was that on the remote side? I have the SIP port forwarded on the work side…

I meant on the remote side. For instance, if you use a NAT device like a broadband router at home, you would forward it from there.

Please remember that there are some security implications to allowing forwarded ports into your remote network.

A better practice altogether would be to set up some sort of VPN between your remote site and office, then just operate as if you were on the LAN at the office.

I found that for me turning on qualify fixed some of these issues without need to change anything on the remote firewall.
