in short, you create an entry in sip.conf for your extension and configure the phone using the same authentication details.
if you’re a complete newbie to this, consider one of the packaged Asterisk distros like Asterisk@Home or Trixbox that have a GUI for configuration. once you’ve got setup you can delve into what’s happening underneath.
