Originating a video call via ARI

I am creating a bridge, then originating 2 channels and adding them to the bridge, via the ARI.

When I do so, my phone rings as if it’s a voice call. Is there some parameter required to originate or dial that tells Asterisk to create a Video call? How does Asterisk know what type of call to create?

It’s based on the requested formats, which are either explicitly defined when originating a channel or another channel can be specified as the originator.

I have been originating voice channels (using the ARI) without specifying a format. Since this has worked, can I assume that Asterisk is using the supported codecs defined for the peers as the “format”? So if there is a video codec defined for a peer, will it try to create a video call?

It’s not. It gets a pruned audio list. You really really really want to specify formats or an originator to have much better negotiated and common codecs. Otherwise Asterisk can’t predict the future and what the channels will be used for.
