I just stumbled over Asterisk today, and I am a little confused ATM due to the amazing amount of info, if my planed setup is reasonable. I would like to replace our existing ISDN-equipment (Agfeo AS 3x) with an Asterisk server, to realise the following setup:
[ul][li]Phone & Fax using an AVM FritzCard PCI on a Smatnode 1200 adapter (ISDN-over-IP with BRI Point-To-Point)[/li]
[li]VoIP access using one (or more) SIP-account(s) or Skype[/li]
[li]Access to one (or more) GSM mobile networks for SMS and cheep mobile rates[/li]
[li]Using two (or more) WLAN-VoIP-Mobilephones with Bluetooth-Headsets[/li][/ul]Can this be realised with Asterisk, without hiring an IT expert?
As far as I could see, the FritzCard should be supported using CAPI, VoIP should be possible as well, but how about connecting to one or more GSM mobile networks the best and cheap way?
How is it with fax support? Can Hylafax be integrated into such a setup easily?
Can I make full use of such a setup by only using WLAN-VoIP-Mobilephones?
Any hint, which WLAN-VoIP-Mobilephone can be used with a Bluetooth headset, and which is worth a recommendation?
Does nobody here have any idea about such a setup?
Is there any place, where I can find user-reports and typical configurations?
I didn’t think, that the combination of ISDN + VoIP (that the major goal, the matter with GSM inclusion was just an idea, but that’s not really important, and could be added in the future if needed) is unusual, but the the fact, that only VoIP-telephones should be used.

I will tell you what I (think i) know.
- phone+fax on ISDN (BRI) is possible (BRI cards, HFC chipset)
- VoIP with SIP providers is possible
- access to GSM network can be done different ways, junghanns has a new card with possibility to add 4 SIM cards.
- VoIP mobile phones exists, depending on where you are, you have several flavors.
Now, about doing this without hiring an expert, it’s hard to tell. We don’t know your level of expertise, neither do we have any idea on the scale you want to implement this. But technically, it’s possible…
For all other info, also read voip-info.org and the asterisk book (The future of telephony).
