Asterisk only supports IM in established voice or video calls.
I still get this error message while i attempt to send instant message to other xlite phone, during established call, error is as under:
(Notice: The person you are sending messages to is using an earlier version of X-Lite, which does not support rich text and emoticons. You may have to send some of your messages again.
