Hi Vinayak,
I just installed Asterisk 1.4, in about 8 hours, and I was new to Linux too.
If you don’t need to use your PC for much else I suggest you start out with AsteriskNOW, that will give your a soft introduction to both Asterisk and Linux.
To do like I did, and installed it on to Linux there is a lot of learning, and you need to install a few other programs that Asterisk depends on.
