Hey,
I read few documents and now I am confused. So I was hoping someone could help. More like answer few questions.
Situation:
I am moving to India for few months on project. I would like to have a quick way of communication with my Prof. and family. I can use skype and other messaging system. That requires being in front of the computer.
What I would like to setup:
I am hoping Asterisk could be the solution. I would like to setup a system, here so that my Prof. or family can call a local number, then dial an extension , or select an option and it would call me in India. And If I pick up the phone in India and dial an extension it connects me to Asterisk system here, and then dial a number that Asterisk will dial out to a local number.
Questions:
-
Is is possible to accomplish what I would like.
-
What hardware do I need, aside form a computer, and Internet connection? (can you please be specific)
-
Am I correct in the fact that I will need an IP phone in India? and any
Analog phone can be used from here (U.S)
-
What would be my setup? (If you have mock diagram it would help).
-
Any thing else that I would need that I haven’t though about?
I am leaving in about two months, so if this is possible I would like to setup it up and test is as soon as possible.
- Do I understand this correct? As long as IP phone is out side the local network where Asterisk system is it shouldn’t matter if the IP phone is in India or anywhere else, as long as the IP address is registered with the Asterisk system
Thank you for you help. Please excuse me if I have posted the message in the wrong place.
Jaysheel.
You may be able to do this by a simpler method…
If you set up a VoIP account with some provider or other, you can get a cheap (or possibly free) number in one of many cities.
You can then use that from anywhere in the world you can get a reasonable internet connection, via a softphone (or VoIP phone, or standard phone plus an ATA box).
Example providers are www.voipstunt.com (limited free outgoing calls).
(I have no connection to these, they are just the first two that come to mind).
There are many other companies with varying rates.
Thank you I will look into it.
