Help cannot send or receive calls need configuration assista

I am testing out a simple 1 line pots installation of Asterisk. I can find plenty of configuration help for sip setups but none for pstn setups. I have a digium X110P clone for testing purposes and just want to send and receive phone calls.

I have the internal soft phone working, I can use the system with internal extensions fine but cannot get outside or have outside callers call the asterisk box.
If people call me from outside the phone just rings, Asterisk will not pick up.
If I try to make a call from my soft phone I get a “all circuits are busy” recording.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Maybe, I can help you, but first I have to examine your phone.conf, modules.conf and extensions.conf. But first be sure that in phone.conf ‘mode’ is set to ‘fxo’!

bye
Steve

Steve,
Thanks for the help here are the files.

Here is the phone.conf:

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Well, your dialplan is too complicated for me as I have just a little time now, but I hope you know where is the context which should be called when a call is coming from PSTN. Anyway the modules.conf is OK, but the phone.conf is not. Asterisk uses this file (phone.conf) for the POTS. So please, set ‘mode=fxo’, ‘echocancel=off’ (see the second line of its comment), ‘context=…’ (to the context which should be called in case of incoming call from PSTN) and finally ‘device => /dev/…’ (where your modem is located, eg.: /dev/modem). Restart Asterisk, and it should work. Anyway, after this weekend I’ll have some experiences with POTS, and I’ll post here if anything should be configured in another way. But till that have fun!

P.s.: Maybe, you should uncomment the gain settings and leave them as they are at the moment.

I would also love to see what the answer on this is. I have my system originating calls just fine but cannot get it to answer at all.

Craig

Okay guys, if I can make my config work, I’ll write a post here describing how to configure Asterisk to use a hardware internal voice modem. But now it’s not working for me. :frowning:

I built a similar system (short of the elaborate dialplan, mine fits on two pages (;->)). I used a bottom-up approach and made sure the individual layers work right.
First I would check if the X100P clone works - did you try zttool to determine that?

When I update the asterisk@home install with the yum command it breaks the modem configuration.
When I update the asterisk@home install with the yum command it breaks the modem configuration.
I’m not quite sure what you mean with that, the obvious answer would be to “paddle back” to where you can verify the configuration as working.
I’ve tried this tool and I have two cards, one is working fine and the other is red (may be a dead line). My working card can originate calls with no problem but I cannot get calls to answer on that line…

Craig

Did you try this (simple troubleshooting, perhaps you went through this already):

 • Reduce system to one card. The two cards might not “play together”, even though zttool show one card OK.
 • PCI is cheap. Check if IRQ’s are sitting on each others’ backs. I believe there’s a couple of ways - I typically check this with the BIOS firmware. Resolve if need be… the “ghetto” solution is to move the card around until there are no IRQ conflicts. With two cards you’ll probably have to do more elaborate configuration work. Either way, you want to build the system as clean and neat as possible. There’s a lot of touchpoints though, I’m learning as I go.
 • Don’t bring back the second card before the system works with one.
 • run asterisk in full debug mode -vvvvvv to see if the system responds AT ALL.
 • You’ve got a second card, swap that in in order to determine if one card is defective (assuming at least one is OK).
 • Check the phone cord: Pull it out from card jack, connect a phone and place a call on the line. Does it ring? Probably, but that’s a quick check, just to make sure you’re not trying to ride a dead horse.
