[HELP] Asterisk Extension list / contacts on your phone

Hi all,

I just installed Asterisk 11 on CentOS 6.4 x64 and everything is running smooth. Let me add that I’m new into the world of VoIP but I’m not new to Linux servers. I’m very happy with everything as of now and most configuration is pretty straight forward. But one subject is bugging me, phonebooks.

At a previous company where I worked we used Cisco hardphones (probably with a very expensive Cisco server) and we had this little button that would let us go into the phonebook and it would show all the extensions with the correct name that were registered at the server.

On my asterisk server, I am currently using about 20 clients and let me add that they are (android-based) softphones. I’ve tried several app’s (Zoiper/sipdroid/csipsimple), but non of them provide this same function. The google results I can find are very limited, except for Aptus FonB, a paid app. I’m looking for more of a diy free version. How can I deliver an in-app phonebook to my extensions? Or is this something that can only be done with hardphones?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hello there. I’ve recently switched our institution from a Mitel solution to an Asterisk solution using the same Mitel desk phones.

The way I handled the phonebook issue was to include it as part of the provisioning template for our phones.

Our Asterisk is setup to do phone provisioning. When the phones boot up, they request their configuration files from Asterisk. The phonebook is manually added to the configuration files that are provided to the phones.

Given the short timeframe available for the switch over, this was the best I could do on short notice. I hope it’s helpful to you in some way.

FonB is free for upto 5 users. For more users it’s 350 USD unlimited users license. I believe this is precisely what you’re looking for, but it’s paid for more than 5 users.
