I upgraded from 1.6 to 1.8 using the steps above without any errors during the installation. I followed the steps described in this link…

Now when I did amportal start, this is what I get…

Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl exist?)

Any ideas?

That message normally just means that the main asterisk process failed to start. You will have to look at the logs to find out where it broke.
