Is it normal to start getting higher dropped packets caused by higher call load even when not associated with any hardware resource constraints like cpu or network bandwidth congestion

Of course this behaviour is not normal. However, if you want to get any valuable help from the community, you should provide the details of your environment and issue being observed:

  • Which Asterisk version you are running, what kind of hardware / virtual machine you have
  • What is the quantitative value of “higher call load”
  • Do you observe any errors in asterisk and OS logs etc.

Wild guess: your network equipment or Internet connection might become overloaded
