Asterisk and VoIP

Hi,

I am new to Asterisk world. I have few queries.

  1. I have a linux server sitting in one of UK’s data center. Can I use it make VOIP calls after installing ASTERISK? I live in Australia.

  2. Do we need the PC physically at the location from where we will make the calls using VOIP?

  3. Do we need any hardware for making VOIP calls?

thanks,
Mandeep

yes

No as long as you have a voip phone or ata or sip client of some type

  1. Do we need any hardware for making VOIP calls?

See above

Thanks for answering.

If we have only VOIP phone in Australia then how will we make calls? Will the VOIP phone be enough for making calls using server sitting in UK?

Will we have to configure VOIP phones to use the UK asterisk server?

Should the server be visible to outside world only then we can use it to make VOIP calls?

At the moment I am very much confused. Please provide me any other information that will help me.

thanks,
Mandeep

You will have to install asterisk. Then create friends/peers for you voip phones ( am am assuming you phones are using SIP). The you would have to tell the phones to register with the asterisk server through there firmware. Then you will need some kind of IP provider to terminate call from your asterisk server out to the PTSN. You will also need a IP provider to give you DID’s so that calls can be made to your asterisk server and in turn off to your phones.

Hi,

Where will we connect the VOIP phones in the computer? Do we need any hardware in the computer to connect the VOIP phones?

By IP provider did u mean something like this voiptalk.org/products/index.html?

thanks,
Mandeep

“IP-HardPhones” Will be connect to the modem/router or switch and will reach the credentials in the remote asterisk server.
“IP-Softphones” Will be installed in the computer OS and use the network card to reach the remote asterisk server.

For both cases you will need to open ports or forward ports in your router.

Hi,

Will this mean we can use either IP-HardPhones or IP-Softphones?

Will it be better to use IP-Softphones because our asterisk server will be in Uk and i am in Australia?

thanks,
Mandeep

Either one will work just fine. The difference would me having a physical phone on your desk or a phone on your computer in the form of software. Perhaps with a USB headset or something. Oh and price will be a difference as well.
