Understanding the Asterisk versions

I was working with the Fast AGI features and the documentation I’m reading it refers some differences between versions 1.6.x and 1.4.x or 1.2.x.

I’m using an AsteriskNow and when I get the asterisk version I get the following:

asterisk -V

Asterisk 11.7.0

Can get how we talk of version 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6 and then I get a 11.7.0 version.

Can anyone explain this to me please.
