Receive SIP call from internet, send it to PSTN thru modm

I am sure this falls within the knowledge of you voip experts out there. I have broadband connection and a second connection from modem to regular landline/phone line.

Maybe I am day dreaming. My day dreaming goes like this: I want to set up some kind of gateway that will accept sip calls and re route them thru the modem to an actual US phone number.

is this at all doable using astrisk and other goodies? is this too involved? basically I am trying to my own little laptopout (as opposed to skype out). I am doing the same thing big companies do but on an individual level.

any input is MUCH appreciated!

I think it will not work using a modem.

Cheers.

A modem wouldn’t work but you may want to look at the SPA3000(or the replacement model). That should do it for you.

whoa. exactly what I was looking for, that spa3000.

I see rumors on the internet that it is a nightmare to configure, imagine what it would do to me and I haven’t done anything close to it.

come to think of it, I am thinking about hiring a programmer/voip expert to write a program that I can run on a modem to access the landline pstn and correctly route the SIP calls to corresponding phone numbers. is it doable or is the possibility completely non existant for this kind of setup?

anyway, you guys have very good help.

ok sorry for double posting but this post is worth it. check this out. there is already a software that will convert the modem into a pstn gateway!

teleon.net/product1.html

look at TGD-A167. the catch is that the drivers are specific for a certain voice modem, how retarded.

any ideas on how to expand support of modems in this program? are there other wide alternatives, that are also freeware?

It seems like a big mess. If you are trying to go cheap have a look on ebay for a X100P or an X100P clone.
