Local channel limited to 8kHz?

I think I remember I read somwhere that local channels are limited to 8 kHz sampling rates and whenever I involve a local channel it will drop down to that.
Is that true and if so still the case in newer Asterisk versions?

I believe it has never been true. Local channels will adopt the preferred codec of the channel that creates them. They will pass media frames on unchanged. They essentially behave like an external channel that has allow all set (and for which the peer actually accepts any codec).

Maybe you are getting confused by originate, in which case the default codec is slin.
