Installation Problem

I’m running AsteriskNow 1.7 on a 64bit computer and I’m trying to upgrade asterisk to 1.8.
The asterisk version is 1.6.2.11
I’ve downloaded the asterisk 1.8.3 and I’ve uploaded to my /usr/src directory.
I get the following error:
checking build system type…x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type…x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking for gcc…no
checking for cc…no
checking for cl.exe…no
configure: error: in "/usr/src/asterisk-1.8.3’:
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

You appear not to have any development tools (at least not one of the most important ones) installed.
