I am looking to purchase a server to put asterisk on. I have the digium TE412P card and will be planning for a system that can handle 96 concurrent calls.
Does anyone have recommandation for what server works best with asterisk or digium cards?
How much processor power & memory is best or needed for that many calls?
What type of Linux is best for asterisk as well?
Anything else that I might need to get inside my server?
Thank you.
IMHO Athlon x2 series will meet your criteria.
But if there will be handled a much conferencies, therefore might be need for a dual processor opteron (dual core) series on server.
Yes there will be conferences and it will be on a much larger scale the a home office.
Also do you have any recommendations on a stable version of asterisk.

So, your choise seems to be a dual processor dualcore opteron system.
If you need asterisk with some improvements in their source for stability and security - buy the commerce version of * at digium.
Note, that if you planning to use some 3-rd party modules with asterisk, test it deeply before putting to hard work.
Im planning on using an HP proliant dual processor 3.0 GHZ
1 GB of memory
2 72GB hard drives 15,000rpm
with a digium TE412P
Does asterisk fully utilize the dual processor’s?
I was told it might only use 1 of them and that I would have to
recompile asterisk and make some changes in the code for it to use
both processors for my calls?

Processor utilization realized on the OS low level, not in the asterisk or something. Asterisk uses pthreads, so will utilize smoothly all ammount of CPU that will present in hardware.
For building such advanced and huge loaded systems as you declare here you have too stupid questions… So, you better RTFM, before you spend some money.
Im really not trying to build such an advanced system. The digium card will be connected to the PSTN via PRI and Im planning on using all 96 channels of the digium card to terminate calls using g729 codec with my sip clients. I just want to make sure the harware I have already is capable of handling that amount of concurrent calls.
Do you have allready dual processor system based on opteron dualcore stones?
