Asterisk as Instant Messaging/VoIP platform?

Hi,

Can Asterisk be used to build a carrier grade IM/VoIP platform based on the capabilities of SIP/RTP? When I say carrier grade, I mean, in the same league as Skype, GoogleTalk etc. Has anyone attempted this?

As far as I can tell, Asterisk is quite a scalable system, but is really meant to replace corporate PBX systems and requires an IT admin team to maintain.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Paul

This question comes up here rather regularly. The short answer is yes. The long answer is no, becasue of all the of code re-write to make it possible to support carrier level service.

Thanks dufus, that was the kind of answer I was expecting, but just needed confirmation from someone in the know. I’ll check the links.

As best I know Asterisk does not support IM/Presence today. Would be interesting to know if there are any plans?

As for providing a scalable service you may want to consider using SER (freeworlddialup.com) uses this combo today.

I use Jabber/XMPP in conjunction with Asterisk by using the FastAGI capability among other things.
