I understand that Snap and Starutilities offer applications to work between Asterisk and Microsoft applications e.g., Outlook for starting calls and tracking. How do these compare to a pure Microsoft IP PBX such as Vonexus.

I’d recomend to stay with MS if you really want to have well integrated applications. But you are going to endup paying support fees or purchasing expencive service plan because the product is not popular yet. Our software team jumped to MS SQL2005 with very first release of the product and probably payed for all the debugging process in Microsoft for all possible patches because you cannot fix it yourself (compare to Open Source)
We had the same problems with MS.
Try AGI and/or IDEfisk.
