What type of harware is needed to connect an analog phone?

We are going to be implenting Asterisk within our organization soon, and one of the things I am having difficulty determining is what the kind/type of hardware I need if I want to hook up an analog phone or fax machine to the server running Asterisk.

I have figured out that i can use SIP phones via cat5 for each office phone, but we also need to provide an analog dial tone so we can hook up a fax machine and an alarm system.

FXS card or a VOIP gateway (eg. mediatrix VOIP gateway)

Okay, I’ve been reading and see terms like FXS, FXO and ATA, but I don’t actually know what they mean or what they do.

i suggest running a security system off of its own dedicated POTS line…
