Voice Compression card exceeding capability

Long story short:
We have around 50 channels in a call-center now that requires transcoding that are done software and considering to buy digium voice compression card.
The question is: what happens in a peak if calls number break over card capability? Will exceeding calls become software encoded or just drop?
We have the licenses and the codecs in software.


If you’re on an Asterisk newer than 1.4, e.g. 1.6, 1.8, 10, 11, then when the card’s capacity is reached, it’ll de-register itself as an available translator, thus leaving another card or software G.729 as the next option should an additional channel come up that requires the resource.
