Using CLI to configure Asterik

Hi

Is it possibel to use CLI to configure Asterisk

I need to implement a GUI for Asterik 1.6 and I am wondering if it is possibel to use CLI to configure Asterisk
or I need to update Asterisk conf files

Any comments is welcome
