Install asterisk 16 make stops

I’m following the instructions here:

and installing froopbx15 on centos 8.
everything goes fine until I get to install asterisk 16. when I run ‘make’ the procedure stops at:
[CC] chan_sip.c → chan_sip.o
and just hangs there.

The chan_sip.c file is a huge file, it takes time to build. Does top show a CPU core constantly in use? What are the specs of the system?
